Compensation Description

Starting Salaries

$20.00 per hour for non-certified officers (up to $43,680 annually.)

$27.00 - $29.51 per hour after certification, depending on qualifications. ($58,968 to $64,449 annually.)

Hiring Incentives

For Uncertified Officers - Trainee

* 3 year commitment - $15,000.

$10,000 upon hire; $5,000 after successful completion of probation (approximately 1 year.)

* 5 year commitment - $20,000

$10,000  upon hire; $10,000 after successful completion of probation (approximately 1 year.)

Paid Time Off 

Employees begin accruing Paid Time Off (PTO) immediately. For the first 5 years an employee can earn 21.5 days per year. Accrual rates increase incrementally after 5 years of service based on subsequent service years. 
* PTO is available for use after a 6 month introductory period is successfully completed. 
* PTO cash out options based on years of service and accrued balance. 

Paid Holidays

10 paid holidays per year: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, the day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.

Insurance Benefits

* Medical and dental coverage are paid 60% by the employer and 40% by employee.
* A $50,000 life insurance policy is provided at no cost to the employee.
* Vision and disability coverage are available at 100% of the cost being paid by the employee.

Deferred Compensation

* A 457 Deferred Compensation Plan is available on a voluntary basis with all contributions being made by the employee.

Retirement Plan

The City of Alamogordo participates in the New Mexico Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA.) Officers are eligible for retirement at any age after 25 years of service or at age 60 or older with 5 or more years of service credit. Employee contribution equals 6.80% pre-tax. Law Enforcement Academy

Depending on previous Law Enforcement training and experience, applicants will be scheduled to attend the Law Enforcement Academy in Santa Fe, for a period of up to 16 weeks.

At the academy, recruits will study law enforcement and investigative techniques, as well as participating in a strenuous physical conditioning program.

Upon successful completion of the academy, Police Officers will then be assigned to a Field Training Officer for a minimum of three months.
